The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
